The 2022 Vintage
The 2022 growing season in Geelong was the second in a run of 3 consecutive seasons of La Niñas (a 2 in 100 year event!) Like 2020, it was a challenging season – or at least we thought so until 2023 arrived! – characterised by damaging winds as much as the excess rain.
Yields were dramatically reduced by extreme winds in the spring of 2021 during flowering and then heavy summer rain made for a busy summer in the vineyard to keep disease at bay. The smaller crop was every bit worth fighting for though, as nature had intensified the concentration and quality of the remaining fruit. Anything that saw the other side of February had favourable cooler conditions through March, which were perfect for whites and of course, Pinot Noir.
Navigating tricky weather forecasts was the norm for this season however, so it took some courage to leave the fruit out there to reach its potential.
If you could wait, high quality fruit with good flavour concentration was definitely there for the picking!
